While I'm not as pessimistic as you are overall, I do have to say I'm sick of spending so much time reviewing AI slop PRs from junior engineers who obviously didn't even read their code before raising the PR. Goddamn exasperating
People clearly aren’t reading or testing their own PRs anymore. Some prs don’t even have descriptions now. None of this would have ever been acceptable 6 months ago

You dont review it all. You are holding it wrong. Review the TESTS. Insist on a extremely high degree of testing and squeaky clean abstractions. There is zero excuse for laziness in the smell of code these days. The tests and core architecture determine the eventual quality level, with good enough tests and a clean enough arch you can just let the AI render the implementation without worrying about it too much. And you can and should be using AI to assist in that review, friend. Ask it to summarize the changes, look for ugly and unmaintable aspects, ask what additional tests it could have, ask for a range of simplification, as for what whole classes of errors we could avoid by structuring it differently then go back and use your noggin and insist on it.
that's a bad take. tests are abstractions over abstractions. verbose, brittle, mostly fake, narrow focused on edge cases. if you're QA, nock yourself out. else ignore tests as a waste of your intellect. focus on what really matters: zero abstraction domain driven succinct to the point correct by construction human readable code. do it by hand.

I'm sure it's far worse in the SW world but you wouldn't believe the clusterfuck we're creating in HW by trying to get Claude/Codex/etc to create tools to replace actual engineering skills. The tools are beyond useless, they force us to spend 2X to 5X the effort if we want the product to actually work when we build it. Sure, HW engineers can use these AI tools to create SW but that doesn't mean we're ready/capable of doing it successfully and productively. Maybe someday this will all work out but for now our design process is FUBAR. Thank God I'm retiring this year, I'm too old for this shit.

More AI, more slop, more bugs and spaghetti code which is great long term job security. If code volume does 100x and starts breaking while the AI chokes when trying to understand and build context, we will be in a good position going forward. Long live the slop! I’m looking forward to all companies codebases getting turned into a Mount Everest of shit
